While I really enjoyed trying all the food delivery companies, something was definitely missing from the meals. Booze. I was happy to find that there are companies who will delivery liquor right to your door step. Not just liquor but the ingredients to make a classic or artisanal cocktail. This may come as a shocker but I do not go out drinking much which really sucks because I love to drink. In moderation of course. Click to see my adventures with Cocktail Courier.
Before we get into it, let me give you the deets. For $39.99 per delivery, you can have an awesome box of ingredients to make 6-8 cocktails (depending on the recipe)at your door. There are different delivery plans but they range from weekly to bi-weekly and monthly. You can also skip at anytime. A cool thing that Cocktail Courier does that the food companies did not offer is the option to purchase one-off boxes that are not subscription based. So if this interests you but you do not want to be locked in to a subscription, you do not have to. This also means you can select your beverages. With the subscription you do not get to choose your beverage which actually really intrigues me.
The liquor comes neatly packaged. Liquor on the left, ingredients on the right. I will be honest, it took me a few days to unpack this box and it was not an issue at all. The lemons were still fresh (actually extremely juicy) and the honey in the cold pack was still chilled.
The drink I received was the Au Cheval. I was really intrigued. Apple liquor, lemon and honey? Sign me the fuck up. Well, technically I was already signed up but it only reinforced my decision. I would also like to add at this point that while the price of $39.99 may seem steep, this liquor alone runs upwards of 30 bucks a bottle. So it is definitely something I would have never purchased on my own and made the price seem worth it.
In addition to the recipe, you also receive an inventory check list. This is where I ran into my first problem. You see all those items that say “Required Bar Tools (Not Included)” and “Suggested Glassware (Not Included)” Yeah, I had absolutely none of those. Ok, I had a small knife but nothing else.
Without a shaker or a jigger, I continued forward. I used a solo cup to measure my liquor and honey. My measurements were definitely off.
Next I added the lemon. Now here is the actual flaw I found in the recipe (vs. the flaw in my execution). It said 1 ounce of lemon juice or a full lemon juiced. These lemons were so juicy that I found one lemon was far more than 1 ounce. The lemon overpowered the apple liquor greatly.
I added ice and used to mismatched cup to form the worst Boston Shaker. This resulted in a few spills.
I didn’t have a strainer either. Nor a fancy glass so I just chilled a highball and used a colander.
Then I topped it with a spring of rosemary and imbibed. The drink was pretty good but like I stated through out, the ratios and measurements were off. In order to do the company and the apple liquor justice I went out and purchased the proper tools and restarted.
Cocktail Shaker? Check.
2 ounces of apple liquor? Check.
Appropriate measuring device? Check.
Lemon to taste? Check.
High amount of ice? Check.
Perfect layer of condensation? Check.
Fancier chilled glass? Check.
Good strainer? Check.
Two sprigs of rosemary? Check.
The second time around, the cocktail was so much better. The measurements were right, the proper shaker allowed for the drink to be colder which greatly improved the lemon and the strainer actually strained the lemon seeds.
I have now made this cocktail a few times and have also received a second box with my favorite (and Oprah’s) to be reviewed soon. I have been really impressed with the quality and deliciousness of the recipes. For the Au Cheval, I had extra apple liquor leftover so I can continue to experiment with it and hopefully learn some more drinks.
