My taste for wine falls somewhere between a box and jug that has a handle. I was sadly born into a family of plebs who were not able to sate my love for the beautiful fermented nectar that is wine. Just kidding. Really, no one in my immediate family drank wine and it wasn’t until I tried Arbor Mist at an undisclosed age that I truly understood how great wine can be. Well, shocker, but Arbor Mist really isn’t wine. And a hearty Merlot compared to Arbor Mist is a major adjustment for the palate. Also–to an inexperienced wine drinker, wine can be pricey. Thank goodness for the Von’s (Safeway for anyone outside of So Cal) six-pack discount. I basically needed a way to experience good wine and not break the bank without having to buy six bottles at a time. This is where Club W comes in.

I really chose Club W because I Googled wine club and they popped up with a discount. I would probably buy anything with a discount. I did browse some other companies and did actually choose a second company to try (to be reviewed at a later date), but the thing that brought me back to Club W was the quiz they asked me to get my flavor palate. The quiz is 6 questions about your taste preferences which they use to build your recommendations.

Or my personal favorite question:

Skip the wine and bring me a jar of dirt.

Skip the wine and bring me a jar of dirt.

Don’t worry if you know what you like or you don’t like the taste selections they chose for you. You can select a minimum of 3 wines that are featured monthly for $13 each. They also have a selection of Curator’s Choice Wines that range from $14 and up which can be included in your minimum order. You also have the choice of selecting a white or red selection amount. If you are adventurous you can state your preferences and have them send whatever they select. I have a picky palate. For example I LOVE mushrooms and truffles but hold the dirt. I get 3 bottles, 2 white and 1 red, pre-selected for me. Each time I have ordered, I have had to change out at least one bottle but the other two choices have been spot on. They are really easy to control and you can also skip a month like other subscription boxes.

The shipping is really easy but you need to make sure there is someone over 21 present to sign for it. I get it delivered to my work so that someone is always there to sign.

The day my wine came, I actually forgot about it. We had an HR incident and I was in the middle of a meeting when I got the email that I had a package at the warehouse. Of course I stayed in the meeting, but my heart raced to the warehouse. I had to contain myself because we are not allowed to have alcohol at a government facility and even though it was unopened and in a package, if we had a random inspection, I might have gotten in trouble. Plus everyone was hovering around my cubicle. So I had to wait until I got home.

I traded a red for another white in this one. Sue me, I am a sucker for sweet whites.

In addition to the wine, they also send you cards that describe the wine itself and give you a recipe pairing.

The cards give a nice description of the flavor and tells you how to drink it (such as chilled) and where it falls on the earth, fruit, body and wood notes.

The back of each card included a complementary recipe. But realistically, if I was going to make a roasted beet salad with pistachios and cheese or make mussels, I would not be buying wine from a wine club.

I started with the Loves Me Not–Malvasia Blanc from Paso Robles, California

Loves Me Not

Loves Me Not boasts a lychee, honeysuckle, elderflower, honeydew, jasmine, peach flavor combination. The Verdict on this was mixed. I had this with a salad for lunch and I thought the wine was a tad bit dry for describing itself as a sweet wine but it worked very well with my salad that had a spicy dressing. However, later at an all girls night, my mother and a friend (Hi Ashley) thought the wine was horrible and bitter.

Well, they may have crappy palates but I would give it a 2.5-3 stars. It wasn’t my favorite wine but I would order it again especially over a Pinot Grigio or a Cabernet.

The next wine in the box was the Wilhelmina Riesling from Santa Ynez Valley, California.

Riesling

This Riesling has notes of pear, wet stone, dates, smarties, and peach gummy rings. I brought this wine to a House Warming party and because I was on antibiotics, I was unable to partake. (Jess and Brandon, if you know how this wine tasted, let me know!)If this wine were to become available again, I would definitely try because I love a good Riesling. And of course the peach gummy rings?

The third wine in my box was the one I was looking forward to the most, the Rambutan Muscat Blanc from Paso Robles, California.

Muscat Blanc

The shape of the bottle reminded me a lot of the wine that we had in Greece. This Muscat Blanc has the flavor of white grape juice, pear, kiwi, roses, coriander, and honeysuckle. It is also a favored table wine in the South of France. It was complex and I actually liked it. It was sweet to taste but afterwards it was dry. Club W compared the flavor to a Pinot Grigio but it was not that dry at all. I still have a little of the bottle left and I think I will dip into it tonight.

I would rank this wine a 3 out of 4 and would definitely purchase it again.

While my April selection of wine was decent, nothing blew my mind. It was enough for me to order my second shipment and let me tell you, all three of my selections looked so tasty that I do not even want to share!
