Recently, I was diagnosed with a health issue. While this issue may cause some difficulties later in life, it is treatable (not curable) with some simple medications. Some people may be horrified to find out they have a syndrome or a disease but it comes to me as relief; I have felt crappy for many years, mentally and physically. I have been treated for depression and have gone on many diets all with little to no results. It turns out, the depression and the weight gain are part of my medical condition and I am now getting the help I need. What does this have to do with juicing? Nothing really, but I decided to do a 3 day cleanse to prepare myself for the lifestyle changes I am going to have to make to life normally with my health issues.
Why a juice cleanse?
Juicing is the diet fad/lifestyle that is really popular right now. Everyone from coworkers to my 50 something year old uncle has been doing it and for the most part, they all have had good things to say. I watched Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and it didn’t do anything for me. I have no emotional attachment to animals what so ever. Basically, I only have a few issues related to the food industry and they are more related to chemicals and hormones. That being said, I fought juicing hard. Even as I saw my coworkers drop the pounds, I didn’t think I could do juicing. There are different levels of juicers; some juice all day for several days (sometimes months) at a time while others just juice as a meal replacement.
I wanted to start over. My new medication has some very strict dietary guidelines. Because of my personality, I had to quit these foods cold turkey but I knew some of the effects such as caffeine withdraw can last for days. I didn’t really want to do an enema and I can’t afford a colonic, so a cleanse was the best option for be to restart my body. I am not particularly looking to lose weight during a 3-day cleanse. I would be shocked if some pounds didn’t come off but the goal is not to use this cleanse to drop a ton of weight.
Making Juice or Buying Juice?
I don’t own a juicer and I am lazy. When I originally set out to juice, I looked into several different juicers and looked into how much produce I would need to get however many ounces. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed. Then one day, an actress I follow on Instagram posted a picture of her cleansing with Moon Juice and I got into the idea of buying a juice cleanse. Moon Juice was a bit out of my price range and since it was a LA based company, it was going to cost even more to get the juice shipped. I know San Diego is not as big as LA but I knew we had to have some local places.
I did some more researching and I found a company, Suja Juice, that was running a sale that was ending that very same day. Call it serendipity or stupidity but I made up my mind that I was going to do the cleanse through them. I did some half-assed research from other companies just for the sake of my mind but the sale and free shipping they were offering was averaging about 60-100 bucks cheaper. I already knew I was going to go through them.
The ordering was really simple. Most companies like Suja and Moon Juice offer a beginning cleanse which has some sweeter and fruitier juices and a more advance cleanse. The difference they tell is calorie intake but being honest, the beginning cleanses have 2 sweeter and fruitier options. I obviously chose the beginning cleanse. Which comes with 6 juices for 3 days. A total of 18 bottles. You can order for more days but I didn’t need it and I think the sale was specific to the 3-day cleanse. All of the juices are organic however not all are vegan because of added honey. You can specify these dietary needs and others like a nut allergy in the ordering process and they will swap them out for you.
Delivery was a breeze. I simply picked the day I wanted to receive it and Suja had it delivered by that day. As seen in the picture above, it came in such a huge box. It was actually the length of my dining room table.
How do they ship “fresh” juice?
There are different methods like pasteurization or the one Suja uses which involves cold pressure. I personally don’t care but I understand the need for this to be a raw and organic process. Inside the box, they create a foam cooler with several ice packs. I honestly forgot I ordered the juice to work and ended up having to meet family for dinner. I had the box all day and didn’t open until almost 21:00 and the ice packs were still frozen.
Do the juices taste good?
I can’t answer that question yet (expect another post shortly) but I can tell you the flavors and what they are for.
